Vilamoura: villas then, villas now
Vilamoura's first villas were very different from today's holiday villas and you can still see the remains of the Algarve's Roman history at Vilamoura. This carefully planned and well-serviced development encompasses just about everything you could want from a sunshine holiday; superb villa, apartment and hotel accommodation, beautiful beaches, all kinds of sporting activities and a rich source of sophisticated entertainment - day and night.
Close to Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Carvoeiro and Almancil, the village of Quarteira is just next door and Loulé is only 10 minutes inland. The villas on the Sun-hat villa list are mostly low rise, with apartments also available in the area. All accommodation is well appointed and many properties are villas with pools, furnished and equipped to a very high standard. Vilamoura has its own private airstrip and attracts celebrities from all media, who come to play golf at one of the four championship 18 hole golf courses - or simply to enjoy the chic lifestyle of the complex.
Marina de Vilamoura
Vilamoura resembles the resorts of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, in terms of the excellent facilities and leisure activities available. This stretch of coastline in the Algarve has the weather, beaches, golf courses, water sports, shops, entertainment and villa accommodation to satisfy the most discerning traveller. One particular asset that Vilamoura boasts is the smart new Marina de Vilamoura. With the capacity for 1,000 yachts, the marina has an air of exclusivity, with a choice of fashionable bars and restaurants to match.
The Black Jack nightclub and elegant casino make for a marvellous evening out in style, but if you want a more relaxed experience, make a meal of the local dish, Chicken with Piri-Piri sauce enjoyed "al fresco", at one of the more casual eateries - and then take a stroll along the promenade. The feeling of well-being this can give you is really quite addictive.
Everything's here
Vilamoura's size, approximately 2,000 hectares, means that it contains just about every activity on the complex and it is covered by both private and local security protection. In addition to the Golf Courses and the marina, there are a myriad of clubs geared towards sport, fitness and leisure pursuits. Choose from horse riding, lawn bowling, tennis, squash and shooting or maybe take the family to the Aqua Splash marine park in Quarteira. If you want to sit down and cool off indoors, there's also a cinema on the site.
You can hire a car and do some exploring outside the complex itself, although this is not really essential, as there is so much choice on your doorstep and you can always take a taxi or book an excursion tour.
