The Cascais coast was the first place to be seen by ships approaching the Tagus Estuary, and was the last image seafarers took with them when they headed for the far flung corners of the Portuguese Empire Its population witnessed the departure of the earliest explorers and saw them return with treasures from Africa, spices from India and gold from Brazil.

In more recent times, the region became a pioneer of Portuguese tourism when in 1870 the royal family chose Cascais, as its summer residence due to its excellent location close to Lisbon, natural surroundings, temperate climate and high quality of the local waters.

Discover Cascais & Sintra

Cascais

What was once a sleepy fishing village has become the buzzing summertime playground for those in the know. Wave-frolicking ‘Lisboetas” flock here ever since King Luís I made it the official royal summer residence in 1870.

The laid-back feel of this picturesque town is perfect for those seeking a chic, leisurely destination to unwind by the sea.

Horse-riding by the beach, world-class surfing locations, some of Europe’s best golf courses and luxury yachts blend in perfectly with quaint picnics perched atop the cliffs of Cabo da Roca – Europe’s westernmost point – with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, accompanied by a great bottle of Portuguese wine.

With an understated beauty, both in its mediterranean architecture as in its wild beaches, Cascais is one of the most exciting destinations in Portugal; Guincho beach is home to some of the most legendary waves in all of Europe, hosting international surfing competitions, the marina hosts an ever-growing fleet of luxury yachts, and Cascais’ restaurants are gaining more and more international recognition.

But this is not why you should come – the wild stretches of sand at Guincho beach (inhabited only by a handful of local surfers and not much else for the other days of the year where the competition is off), the mountainous backdrop of Sintra, and the sheer authenticity of a town and a people that has been largely unaffected by the times, make it one of the few destinations that feel, as of yet, undiscovered. Stroll the cobblestone roads leading down narrow, winding paths to the beach, watch local fishermen doing what they’ve done for centuries, and sample the freshest fish you’ll find anywhere in Europe, straight from the ocean that unfolds before you. This is the true pleasure of Cascais; the pristine little details that make it so authentic.

Sintra

Envelop yourself in Sintra’s ethereal beauty; fairytale palaces and gothic architecture are surrounded by magnificent lush green gardens, in a town that takes you back to the medieval ages of royal Portugal.

Less than half an hour away from Cascais, amidst sprawling green mountains, dewy forests and glittering fairytale palaces, rests the medieval town of Sintra. With a true feeling of traveling back in time, its UNESCO World Heritage sites provide for some extraordinary scenery; pastel-hued manors and baroque palaces fold into lush green hills that roll down to the blue backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.

With its history dating back to the 8th century, the Celts used to worship their moon god in Sintra’s clear skies, and the Moors built their castle – the ruins of which you can still visit today – on one of its precipitous mountains, next to which sits the National Palace of Pena; one of the greatest expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world, with its pink, yellow and pink towers being visible all the way from Lisbon on a clear day.

Everywhere, perfectly-preserved azulejos line the town’s facades, speaking to its regal past. Its winding roads, that lead up to the hills, provide awe-inspiring views – none more so than the one felt at Cabo da Roca, Europe’s westernmost point, where the hills give way to massive, jagged cliffs and the wilderness of the Atlantic Ocean’s waves below.

Discover Lisbon

The city’s postcard-perfect landscape of terracotta roofs, winding cobblestone alleways, ancient ruins and azulejo-filled facades is as captivating as it is exciting – a recipe that has been crafted over almost a millenia of existence.

Immerse yourself in a European capital unlike any other – as you while away the hours sipping coffee on one of the many open squares around the city, you’ll understand why Lisbon has become such a European favourite.

As you land in the city of seven hills, terracotta rooftops set against the deep blue backdrop of the mighty Tagus river set the scene for this buzzing capital city. As you descend upon its sun-kissed streets – Lisbon’s light is quite unique – you’ll find an exciting blend of old and new; the century-old tram system that finds its way through the winding, cobblestoned alleys of the ancient moorish quarter of Alfama, suddenly gives way to the stylish Chiado, where age-old herbalists and tailors exist alongside fashion designers and international luxury brands.

Up the hills of the boho Bairro Alto quarter, where bar-filled cobbled lanes mark the start of any night out, you’ll reach the top of the hill at Príncipe Real, a fairytale district where pastel-coloured, 19th century mansions line the streets of what has become Lisbon’s hippest quarter: bright tiles pave the way as you discover each of its colourful corners, stumbling upon shop after shop of the coolest vintage collections or previously unheard-of local designers.

As you descend closer to the river, Lisbon’s nocturnal soul becomes more evident, as river-facing warehouse nightclubs and the pink street down at Cais do Sodré make the city a libertine’s dream. Going west along the riverside, just under the bridge, sits LX Factory, a previously-abandoned industrial factory turned creative hub that serves as the stage for a wide range of fashion, arts, architecture and musical events, along with a selection of restaurants, nightclubs and perhaps what is one of the most impressive street-art districts in the world. Finally, just passing under the bridge on the way to Cascais, you’ll find the sundecks and sprawling gardens of the Belém waterfront, where Portugal’s rich sea-faring history is celebrated with a Manueline-style 18th century Monastery and a set of imposing river-facing monuments in homage to the “Age of Discoveries”.

But Lisbon is so much more than this eclectic and exciting collection of its own unique neighbourhoods; its true magic lies in the way it feels so very authentic and undiscovered. There are no crowds, no mandatory itineraries, no one telling you where to go. It’s a city that invites you to discover, little by little, all its mysteries, quirks and secrets – making you fall in love with it every step of the way.
