The acclaimed Royal Course is among the top 100 best golf courses in Europe. The picturesque course is made up of rolling fairways set amidst pine trees and beautiful lakes surrounded by wild flowers.
The Royal Course has plenty of water hazards, sand traps and generally has more length than its neighbouring course, the Ocean Course. Thirteen holes from the Royal course are combined with five holes from the Ocean course to form a composite layout designed fine enough to host the Portuguese Open in 2003. It will therefore come as no surprise that the Royal course is huge test of golf.
The star of the Royal is the par three 16th. This cliff top signature hole measures 224 yards from ‘the tips’. This is probably the most photographed hole in Portuguese golf and the view from the back tee perched on the edge of a cliff will undoubtedly become one of your all-time favourites. The chance to lose a bunch of balls on this hole alone is worth the green fee.
