Golden beaches, long sunny days and beautiful villas might be what first draws you to the Algarve, but time your visit right and there’s even more to discover.
Throughout the year, towns and villages across the region come alive with music festivals, traditional celebrations, food events, sporting spectacles and colourful local festivities. They’re a wonderful way to experience another side of the Algarve and an excellent addition to a villa holiday.

Loulé Carnival

Where: Loulé
One of the Algarve's liveliest annual traditions, Loulé Carnival brings a very different atmosphere to this historic market town.
Expect colourful floats, elaborate costumes, music and plenty of entertainment as the streets fill with spectators for several days of celebrations.
If you're visiting the Algarve outside the traditional summer season, it's a great opportunity to experience a side of the region that many holidaymakers never see.
And Loulé itself is well worth exploring while you're there. Wander through its cobbled streets, visit the distinctive covered market and stop for lunch at one of the town's cafés or restaurants.
Festival MED

Where: Loulé
For a few summer evenings, Loulé's historic centre is transformed into one enormous celebration of music and culture.
Festival MED has become one of the Algarve's standout cultural events, bringing together artists and influences from around the world. But there's much more than music to discover, with food, street entertainment, handicrafts, dance, cinema and other cultural events all forming part of the experience.
Performances take place across stages and atmospheric spaces throughout Loulé's old town, making the setting almost as memorable as the music itself.
It's a fantastic evening out if you're staying around Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura or the surrounding Golden Triangle.
Festival Internacional de Esculturas em Areia - Sand Sculpture Festival

Where: Algarve
One for the whole family, the Algarve's famous sand sculpture events take something associated with every beach holiday and transform it into an art form.
Huge, incredibly detailed sculptures are created from tonnes of sand, often around a different theme, with everything from famous landmarks and historical figures to film characters appearing in previous exhibitions.
If you're travelling with younger children, it's an easy addition to a family day out - although the scale and detail of the sculptures tend to impress adults just as much.
Feira Medieval de Silves – Silves Medieval Festival

Where: Silves
For several days each summer, the historic city of Silves turns back the clock.
Its cobbled streets and impressive red sandstone castle provide the perfect setting for the annual Medieval Festival, when costumed performers, market stalls, musicians and entertainers take over the old town.
Expect traditional crafts, food stalls, street performances and plenty of medieval theatre as you wander through the city.
It can feel wonderfully atmospheric after sunset, making this a particularly good choice for an evening away from the beach.
Festival do Marisco - Olhão Seafood Festival

Where: Olhão
If seafood is one of the highlights of your holidays in Portugal, this is an event to put firmly on the list.
Held in Olhão, beside the Ria Formosa, the Festival do Marisco celebrates the exceptional seafood for which this part of the Algarve is famous.
The event traditionally combines an enormous choice of fresh seafood with regional produce, local crafts and live music.
Olhão itself is also well worth discovering. Explore its distinctive markets and waterfront before settling in for an evening of fantastic food and entertainment.

FATACIL

Where: Lagoa
FATACIL is one of the Algarve's biggest annual events and offers an interesting glimpse into the region beyond its beaches and resorts.
Part agricultural fair, part craft exhibition, part food festival and part concert, it brings together producers, artisans, businesses and performers from across Portugal.
It's particularly good if you enjoy discovering local produce and Portuguese food, with plenty of opportunities to sample flavours from the Algarve and further afield.
If you're staying around Carvoeiro, Lagoa or the western Algarve, it's an easy event to incorporate into your holiday.
Mediterranean Beach Games 2027
When: 11–18 September 2027
Where: Portimão and Lagoa
2027 brings a particularly exciting international sporting event to the Algarve.
Portimão and Lagoa will host the fourth Mediterranean Beach Games from 11 to 18 September 2027, welcoming athletes representing Mediterranean Olympic committees to the region.
Events are expected to take place around Praia da Rocha, Alvor, Praia Grande in Ferragudo and the Arade estuary.
The programme encompasses a wide variety of sports, including beach handball, football, open-water swimming, rowing, tennis, sailing and volleyball.
For anyone considering a September 2027 Algarve holiday, it offers the opportunity to combine late-summer sunshine with a major international sporting event.
Festival do Sardinha - Portimão Sardine Festival

Where: Portimão
Few things say summer in Portugal quite like the smell of sardines cooking over charcoal.
Portimão celebrates one of the country's simplest and most loved dishes with its annual sardine festival.
Traditionally centred around the city's riverside area, the festival combines freshly grilled sardines with live entertainment and a wonderfully relaxed summer atmosphere.
You don't need an elaborate plan for this one. Arrive hungry, find a table and enjoy one of the Algarve's most traditional summer experiences.
Noite Branca Algarve - Loulé White Night

Where: Loulé
If the 2027 edition falls during your holiday, Loulé's famous White Night is well worth experiencing.
Visitors dress in white and the town follows suit, with streets and buildings transformed by striking decorations, installations and lighting.
Music, street performers and entertainment appear throughout the town, creating an enormous open-air celebration that continues into the evening.
It's one of the Algarve's most distinctive nights out and another very good reason to venture inland from the coast.
Christmas and New Year's Eve in the Algarve

The Algarve isn't only a summer destination.
December brings Christmas markets, lights and festivities to towns across the region, while New Year's Eve is celebrated with parties, live music and fireworks in several of the Algarve's larger resorts and towns.
With milder winter temperatures and a considerably more relaxed pace than during the height of summer, it's a lovely time to discover another side of the region.
