Inaugurated in 2003 at the village of Pêra, FIESA is a mega exhibition of sand sculptures. The festival is the only event of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula and is considered the largest sand sculpture festival in the world. From March to November talented sculptors use around 40,000 tonnes of the unique sand found only in this area, to build enormous sculptures for a different theme.
A series of free cultural and leisure activities are planned throughout the season in an area reserved for people who like to express their creativity. Sand City offers a number of musical events, activities, workshops, video mapping and demonstrations on the sand sculpting technique.
During the day the sculptures can be admired in all their infinite details. At night there is a varied programme of live music, theatre, dance and circus arts. We suggest you get there at least an hour before sunset so you can view the sculptures in both daylight and when they are illuminated at night. Between July and September Sand City is open until midnight each day.
A great day out for all the family, Sand City has several spaces designed for children. A bungee trampoline, ‘park’ with sand from the beach and small buildings on the sand are available and when the little ones get peckish the Hamburger-Bar is on hand. Their promenade is a lovely place to relax and is the equal of the best beaches in the Algarve.
Seeing these works of art made from this strange medium is as compelling as it is unusual so if you visit the area between March and November a visit to FIESA - International Sand Sculpture Festival is well worth the wait.
