Praia de Benagil is a real working beach with fishing boats, nets and baskets all greeting you as you head down to the sand. If you are lucky, you will see fishermen bringing the catch of the day ashore.

Many fishermen also offer boat trips with the most popular destination being the world famous cave known as Algar de Benagil. This cave has been featured in top destination lists and ‘places you have to see’ all across the internet and thanks to visitors sharing their incredible photos of the cave it has become one of the top things to do in the Algarve. From inside you can see the blue sky through an opening in the ceiling, also known as the eye. If you have a postcard of a Portuguese cave it is probably an image of this one.

Back at the beach the access to the water is quite pleasant, but it is also quite steep. Weak swimmers should be very careful, especially because there are no lifeguards in situ. If you don't want to lie in the blazing sun you should bring your own sunshade. The only time you can find shade that is not too close to the rock face, and thus at risk from falling rocks, is in the afternoon. Even then there are only a few. In the height of summer it gets a bit busy on Praia de Benagil beach, but it's never so busy that the beach towels are packed in like sardines.
